The colloid solves the issue of electrolyte layering in batteries where the electrolyte is not in a gel state. This problem arises due to gravity affecting the distribution of the electrolyte, resulting in the negative electrode plate at the bottom being prone to sulfation and the upper grid being susceptible to corrosion. To address this, colloids are added to the battery after high-speed stirring. The thixotropic nature of the colloid causes it to rapidly form a mesh-like structure, effectively preventing electrolyte layering.
